Suitable for the whole family, the Taivalvaara Nature Trail begins in a scenic ridge landscape before descending into the lush riverside forests along the River Iijoki. The trail passes through a variety of natural environments and points of interest.
The landscape along the Taivalvaara Nature Trail is remarkably diverse. The trail begins in a dry, light-filled pine forest on the slopes of Taivalvaara and continues through sections of more humid spruce forest. Early along the route, you can visit the fascinating Kylmäperä wetland, Finland’s second-largest natural spring. The riverside forest along the Iijoki is dominated by alder trees and still shows traces of the area’s traditional meadow culture. From the birdwatching tower at Turvakonalus, you may spot a rich variety of birdlife. The trail also reveals signs of human activity in the landscape, including a reindeer enclosure.
Along the nature trail, there are ten information boards introducing the area’s geology, history of land use, forest structure and use, traditional meadow and reindeer-herding culture, as well as local plants and birdlife. The route also features a birdwatching tower, a viewing platform and other facilities, including benches and tables. A lean-to shelter is located next to the Turvakonalus birdwatching tower.
